![]() The Venus Wars is actually one of the better anime films I have ever seen. It is about a bunch of monobike racers on the terraformed planet of venus who become embroiled (common theme) in a war to control the planet. Soon their leader, Hiro, finds himself drafted into an elite force of military monobike pilots. Cool music, great animation of large scale combat, and the requisite bimbo character (that would be the reporter in case you can't tell), makes this one a definate favorite. Robot Carnival is a collection of several short animated stories all involving a robot or android of some sort. Some of the pieces are rather forgettable, but two in particular will always stand out in my mind: Presence and Nightmare. I can't really even begin to describe presence. It is a haunting story of a man who creates a lifelike female robot and then destroys her. It is quite sad, a lot like Frankenstein, and one of my all time favorite films. Nightmare would fit in nicely at an LSD party. Heavily armed schoolgirls who can't keep their skirts pulled down, A mothership full of hermaphroditic aliens, and an achingly stupid girl named C-ko who cries more than anything else. Project A-ko rules, but there really is no point in talking about the plot.
I have every episode on tape and I keep wishing there were more. Most people in their late teens to early twenties will probably remember watching Robotech when it was on tv in the states. I know I have fond memories of watching crap, crap, crap, Voltron, crap, and then finally, ahhhhh Robotech. I loved every exciting, mushy minute of it. Who could forget Khyron's final attack, or the Christmas episode!!! or even Max and Miriya's battle through the Super Dimensional Fortress... not me. Much of what I said about Robotech also applies to Star Blazers, which was another childhood staple. A bit older than Robotech, Star Blazers is about the crew of a converted battleship called the Argo that is on perilous mission to save the earth. This show had the most amazing theme song ever. It was so catchy (well at least in america, I can't really speak for any other releas.) Star Blazers also introduced one term into the venacular of school boys everywhere: Wave Motion Gun.... Pure magic.
