OVERVIEW Akira is the quintessential anime classic. It is beautifully animated, contains a complex storyline, and plenty of violence. The film tells the story of a gang of biker punks who in the course of a rumble with another gang become embroiled in a government experiment gone wrong. The young Tetsuo, insecure and hungry for respect finds himself with incredible mental powers. And as was inevitable, he soon becomes too powerful to control and breaks out. The ensuing conflict is nothing short of amazing. Akira is highly recommended to anyone interested in anime, although I would be surprised if a person who was into anime had not yet seen this movie. This one is a must see. GROUP DISCUSSION The group genuinely like Akira and had several good comments about the film: Angela raised the question, "How the hell could Tetsuo sit there and worry about Kaneda's bike while the Clowns rape his girlfriend. Very intriguing, this makes me want to watch more." Jeremy thought that Akira had great art and an equally great story. "I was extremely impressed." Kris, the somewhat nervous host of this, the first ever section 6 anime viewing made sure to point out such things as the wonderful animation, what bimbos the female characters actually were, and various elements of the story that would help the group get through the weird time warp sequence a la 2001 that is the film's ending Michelle seemed to have a fairly cynical attitude about being at the screening, but later remarked, "This was great, I especially liked the mature themes. This sure isn't for kids" Kevin I can't actually say that I was present, but hey, my opinion counts too. I've always loved Akira for the amazing art and story. There's something about the way that violence is depicted in this film, it's all at once fantastic and very horribly realistic. I also liked the gritty sub plots about political turmoil in a troubled city. It's just something that is rarely seen in american animation.
