The following is a list of the most frequently asked questions that Graduate Students ask the SLIS front office staff. Most questions can also be answered by your advisor, the graduate bulletin, or the School of Library & Information Sciences website.

SLIS Program

Q: How many hours for the entire program?

A: Thirty six hours are required for the Master's Degree, 9 of which are core courses. For more information, see the Graduate Bulletin or the program requirement section of this guide.

 

Q: What is the practicum all about? When do I have to satisfy practicum requirements?

A: Read practicum information here. The best place to get the most current information is to ask your advisor.

 

Q: What about my degree plan? What is it? Who is responsible for it?

A: Degree plans can be discussed individually with advisors and need to be on file by the end of the first 12 hours.

 

Q: When do I take the Capstone Experience?

A: You'll need to register for this in your last semester. Find more detailed information on Capstone on the UNT SLIS website.

Registering for Classes

Q. When do copies of the next semester's schedule of classes become available?

A. Copies of the next semester's schedule of classes become available in the middle of the current semester and can be found in the SLIS front office. For the most current information, though, use the SLIS schedules website.

 

Q: How do I register?

A: The most useful and up-to-date information is published each semester in the schedule of classes bulletin. The SLIS schedule of classes can be found at: http://www.unt.edu/slis/courses/schedules/index.htm. For the complete schedule of classes, including registration dates, go to UNT's Calendars, Schedules & Catalogs page at: http://www.unt.edu/catalogs/catsched.htm. Print versions of these bulletins can be found in the SLIS front office and in the Eagle Student Services building.

The process of registering for classes is done online through myUNT. For the schedule of classes bulletin, please go to: http://www.unt.edu/catalogs/catsched.htm .

 

Q: What are the restricted codes for registration and where do I get one?

A: Certain courses (Pre-requisites, corequisites, and special problems) require clearance codes for registration. This clearance or restriction codes can be obtained from the staff in the SLIS office in ISB or your faculty advisor.

 

Q: Can I use my credit card to make tuition payments? How?

A: Yes, students may view bills, and credit cards can be used to pay tuition and fees online using myUNT.

 

Q: Should I be advised every semester?

A: Yes, it is up to students to schedule an appointment with their advisors each semester.

 

Q: When do I apply for graduation and all of its corresponding deadlines?

A: Deadlines are listed in the schedule of classes bulletin. You can access the schedule of classes bulletin at: http://www.unt.edu/catalogs/catsched.htm. SLIS provides a list of frequently asked questions about graduation.

Q: When do I have to satisfy computer requirement?

A: The computer skills requirement which should be met before the end of the first 12 hours of credit. Please view further information on the SLIS computer requirement page.

Q: How do I access my UNT e-mail address or UNT Web space?

A: UNT offers its students many Internet services, including free Eagle Mail. For details, please refer to the Computing Center's Internet Services website.

 

Q: How can I get a locker?

A: Lockers are available to rent through the SLIS office for $5.00 each semester.
