International Education Week Essay Competition:  Call for Reflection Papers

“Sustainability: The Key to Global Citizenship”

Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit reflection papers for the first annual International Education Week Essay Competition.  This essay competition will be held as part of International Education Week (IEW) activities. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton initiated IEW in 2000 to focus concentrated attention on the importance of international education and intercultural/international understanding.

This year, International Education Week will be celebrated November 16-20, 2009.  The theme of this year’s essay contest is “Sustainability: The Key to Global Citizenship.”  This follows UNT’s four key strategic themes:   Diversity & Multiculturalism, Internationalization, Collaboration, and Sustainability.

This is also the topic of the reflection paper, which should express the writer’s vision and perspective on the theme and demonstrate the following:

  • An understanding of how international education fosters global responsibility and citizenship—creating a sustainable future
  • Knowledge of  key 21st Century issues of sustainability and the role of international education in addressing those issues
  • An awareness of the complexity surrounding world sustainability issues
  • An analytical approach to the subject matter
  • Examples of critical as well as creative thinking

All participants will be invited to an International Week reception on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. honoring participants in the IEW Essay Competition and in the UNT International photo competition, Hot Shots from Hot Spots.  At this reception, all participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.  Winners of the IEW Essay Competition will receive the following prizes:
