Conference Review
The 2009 meeting of the North Central and Northeast Texas Region of Phi Alpha Theta in Denton, Texas at Discovery Park on the University of North Texas campus was a very successful event with many excellent papers, discussions, and exchanges.
Attendance at the conference was strong with nearly 100 people, ranging from faculty to graduate and undergraduate students, participating in over 20 paper sessions. Dr. Randolph "Mike" Campbell delivered a stimulating plenary lecture, entitled: "Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and the Issue of Race."
The film screening of Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? entertained many of the conference participants. Faculty and students also visited a variety of display tables sponsored by groups at the University of North Texas--the UNT Bookstore, the UNT Press, Toulouse School of Graduate Studies, UNT Libraries Special Collections, the Portal to Texas History, and the Texas State Historical Association.
Congratulations go out to all of the paper prize winners:
Undergraduate Paper Winners:
1st Place - Tori Sheppard, Austin College - "Women, Marriage, and Singledom in the Nineteenth Century: The Emergence of a Conscious Choice"
2nd Place - Erin Pedigo, Baylor University - "The East India Company Under Oliver Cromwell"
3rd Place - Ashley Dowd, University of North Texas - "The Sumerian Problem: Uruk Period Migrations into Mesopotamia"
Graduate Paper Winners:
1st Place - Debbie Liles, University of North Texas - "Wyatt C. Hedrick: Architect of Texas"
2nd Place - James Blackshear, University of North Texas - "Hay Farming and Property Rights: A Hispano Response to Land Grant Usurpation"
3rd Place - Nick Nelson, University of North Texas - "Economic-Social Mobility and the Planter Class: A Case Study of McLennan County, Texas, 1851-1860"
As is obvious, this was a very proud day in Alpha Lambda chapter history. It is a rare accomplishment for one chapter to take home four of the six awards, let alone sweep the graduate paper category. This is a testament to the hard work put in by the collective 27 University of North Texas students who presented papers at the conference, and is representative of some of the excellent scholarship being produced by Alpha Lambda chapter members.
Plans will soon be underway for the 2010 Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference for the North Central and Northeast Texas Region, which will meet at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. I hope to see a great turnout for the conference!
On behalf of the officers, members, and faculty advisor of the Alpha Lambda chapter of Phi Alpha Theta at the University of North Texas, I thank everyone who participated in and helped with the conference. Your contributions helped make this event a success.
Sincerely,
Derek N. Boetcher
President

Welcome to the new Phi Alpha Theta website!
The new academic year is upon us.
Our chapter's Executive Committee has been hard at work since June planning the event and seminar
calendar for the 2008-2009 academic year. While the major event on the calendar will be the 2009
Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference, which we are excited to be hosting at the University of North Texas,
we would like to put together a full calendar for the entire academic year that will be both fun and
productive for all of the chapter's members. We think we have compiled a very good list of options that will
be of great benefit to the chapter during this next year.
In other news, the website is in the process of being updated and expanded. The expectation is that this site will
allow all members of Phi Alpha Theta to have a vast repository of information about Phi Alpha Theta, the Alpha
Lambda chapter, the University of North Texas, professional historical associations, and any other resources to help
them gain success in the field of historical studies, both as a student and a professional. I welcome and strongly
encourage members to contribute information to the various sections of this website. Together we can make this an
extremely powerful resource for all of us.
Let's work together to make 2008-2009 one of the best years that Phi Alpha Theta has ever experienced here at UNT!
Sincerely,
Derek N. Boetcher
President, Alpha Lambda Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta
