May 4, 2004
- There were eight people who attended this month’s meeting of the FCRG. The food, the atmosphere, and the company were all fantastic, but we managed to get something accomplished, anyway!
- Dallas Newell talked about the Spring Book Sale and thanked Chuck Norton for his dedicated work at
pricing books and organizing the sale. She asked the group if they had any ideas about finding a better way to
do things. Some of the suggestions were as follows:
- Finding a broader base of donors, such as encouraging members of the group to talk to neighbors and co-workers about contributing.
- Contact more departments on campus, such as the English Dept., and find out who is the administrative contact person for each department. Ask them to contact people in their group about donating books for the next sale.
- Get the word out that people can donate a book or several books, and if necessary, we will find a way to pick them up. This needs to be done soon for the summer Book Sale (to be held around July 15th, 2004).
- One thing that was mentioned was that there may be a different set of people in the summer, so even if there are not so many, we might be appealing to people who are not so familiar with the sale or with our program. This is always a good way to get information out to the students and other people on campus.
- The Summer Garage Sale:
- Plans are underway for a garage sale in June, so if everyone will clean out their garage, closets, etc. for contributions it would help. Dallas can take some of the items now, and will price them before taking them to the storage area until it is time for the sale.
- Dallas wanted to state that we will not be accepting clothes this year for the sale.
- Dog Days in June:
- Plan to join us for Dog Days on the Square June 5th (Saturday). Mark your calendar — this is always a lot of fun, you see all kinds of dogs plus all kinds of owners. They DO get to look alike!!!
- Campus Spay and Neuter Program:
- We need to try and get more applicants for this program, so as to be sure to spend the $4,500 within the year that PetSmart donated for our program. Dallas has run an ad in the NT Daily and booked it for the summer. Wording of the ad goes something like: “Stop Pregnancy!!! Volunteer with our group… etc.” with the Web site listed.
- Possibility of running the ad in the Record Chronicle was mentioned. This would be listed under the “Adopt-a-Pet” label in the Pet column. Someone mentioned sending out a press release, where we might be able to talk about more issues.
- Nancy Kelly will be working on a folded flyer for this program.
- Possums!!!
- Well, we are feeding quite a few possums with our feeders this spring. One has been seen coming into the feeder at McConnell Hall, and one at the GAB feeder. Nancy Viens has seen them at the feeder behind Crumley, and anyone who sees that the water is disturbed and full of cat food bits can pretty much assume that it was either a possum or some raccoons. Anyway, we discussed whether or not this could be considered a threat and what might be done about it. If nothing else, they are probably eating a lot of our regular cats’ food! If you have any ideas on this subject, please let either myself or Dallas Newell know.
