Meeting

February 3, 2004

  1. Eight people attended this week’s meeting at the China I Wok, including two new people. Even with our fearless leader missing (Dallas), a lively discussion ensued. Some of the items that we touched on included:
    1. Deniece Taylor told us that our group had been invited by the Volunteer Center to host a table on Volunteer Fair Day, Tuesday, February 17th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event is held in the Union every year, and is free to participants. Nancy Kelly will send out more information about the table shortly, including what is needed in the way of volunteers.
    2. Chuck Norton, our Book Sale Coordinator (with Dallas Newell) discussed the next book sale which will be held on Friday, April 23rd. This day also happens to be Shakespeare’s birthday, as well as falling right after Earth Day, so this seems a unique opportunity for publicity for the sale. Donations of books are needed, and will be accepted by Chuck at his apartment on Ponder St., as well as Dallas Newell’s office in the Eagle Student Services Building.
Due to space problems, I would like one of our members who works on campus to volunteer to be a recipient of books – I will not be able to take books in Willis Library Room 155 except from people in the library. Our “break room” now has two computers in it, and storage space is limited. If you will contact either myself or Dallas and let us know if you can help out, it will be greatly appreciated. We are especially looking for donations of Shakespeare, either biographical or otherwise, or environmental books. All popular fiction, CD’s, or videotapes are of course always welcome! We also will need volunteers to help set up the tables for the book sale in the morning of April 23rd, and others to help us pack up in the afternoon once the sale is over.
    3. Deniece also mentioned that she is looking into setting up a display of “altered books” at the Book Sale. This involves creating other things out of books that are going to be destroyed or are no longer useful. These can be made into many usable decorative items such as CD holders, photo albums, trinket boxes, etc.
    4. We discussed the Jazz Fest and it was pretty much unanimous that we would not participate in it this year. This program has always taken an inordinate amount of work, and has not proved to be profitable enough to warrant our participation.
    5. Nancy Kelly brought up the subject of recycling printer cartridges and said that we can still get money for them. Cartridges should be brought to Dallas Newell’s office in the Eagle Student Services Center room 202.
    6. (Nancy Viens) I mentioned that when we had weekly tables in the Union Building, it had proved to be a good way to gain more publicity for the group, as well as educating the students as to what we were all about. We used to do this once a week. Sometimes we were located in places that were too noisy. And having it once a week, it was hard to find people who could fill in at the last minute. So I thought we might try and set up a Cat Table once a month, making sure that when we do we are able to be over by the Book Store or somewhere where the noise from the One O’Clock Lounge doesn’t interfere. Please let myself or Dallas know what you think.

Nancy Viens
