THE ZETA ETA CHAPTER OF DELTA SIGMA THETA CHAPTER HISTORY The Zeta Eta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was born during the height of revolutionary and social change on the campus of North Texas State (now The University of North Texas). Nineteen visionary collegiate women of high academic standings welcomed Southwest Regional Director June Brewer, members of Ft. Worth and Dallas Alumnae Chapters to witness the chartering on September 29, 1968. Thus Zeta Eta became the first African-American Greek letter organization on campus. Through innovative programs, projects and special services, Zeta Eta continues to articulate the mission of the organization by impacting the lives of humankind in the city of Denton as well as throughout the Metroplex. To date, more than 700 Sorors have joined our sisterhood through the Zeta Eta Chapter and are continuing to honor their lifetime commitment to the ideals of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. CHARTER LINE The Charter Line members started meeting in 1967 in the Student Union. Shelia Clark organized the initial meeting. We went to the Dean of Women and told her of our desire to form an organization. We then contacted Panhellenic on campus and was informed of 1)the need for us to get a sponsor, and 2) our probationary status as a social club. Our social club name was Alpha Omega. Black females on campus were invited to attend the meeting to discuss organizations. Soror Clark went to visit Fisk during that period and brought back feedback about various organizations she observed. At that point we decided on Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Soror Clark's sister was already a Delta and we were impressed with what DST stood for and the Five Point Thrust Program. There were persons from various dorms who tried to change our minds, but we were steadfast. After the one-year probationary period, we then contacted the DST regional director who at that time was June Brewer. She placed us in the custody of the Dallas/Ft. Worth Alumni chapters. In September of 1968 we moved to Chilton Hall. Initially we had quite a few people. After making decisions, some of them dropped out. We proceeded to organize our first Rush party and Open House. Soror Clark and other leaders continued going to Panhellenic and Delta meetings. When we moved to the "Ramps" (College Inn), we became industrious in our attainment of furniture, holding several fundraisers, accepting donations, and creating some items. We used the talents of sorors. One who was a seamstress made curtains and did our upholstery. Our officers were Shelia Clark, President; Gloria Frazier, Vice President;
Marilyn Williams, Secretary; Della Harvey, Treasurer; Willie Mathies,
Chaplain; and Linda Callaway (not initiated on this line), Song Leader.
We were initiated by the Dallas/Ft. Worth Chapters on September 29,
1968, and at that time we had our first pledge line Les Belles Quatorze.
