Robert S. "Bob" Horton, MS

A native of Oklahoma City and third generation Sooner, Bob earned his BBA in Marketing from Southern Methodist University in 1966 and a Masters in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of North Texas in 1998. He is now pursuing a second masters degree in "organizational stuff". His professional and academic work has focused on organizational behavior, community health promotion, urban sociology, educational technology and large-scale mobilization of community volunteers.

Bob has been a lifelong innovator, leading the computerization of the Braniff International periodic aircraft maintenance management systems and restructuring of its international advertising contracts and controls in the late '60's. In the '70's he led the establishment of Southwest Airlines' counter-to-counter airfreight division. In the '80's he helped Houston become one of the cleanest big cities in America. His marketing and program design strategies have recently been implemented by American Humanics, Inc, the Association for Volunteer Administrators International, Keep Denton Beautiful, Inc., and United Way of America.   With the newly-forming Citizen Development Institute of Fort Worth, he is helping design programs to change community normative systems which mold citizens' volunteering, giving, belonging and voting behaviors.

Now a Research Associate with the UNT Center for Public Service, Bob served as the Associate Director of the Educational Consortium for Volunteerism as well as the Campus Director for UNT's American Humanics Nonprofit Certification Program from 1997 to 1999. In those roles, his assignments have included:

On a personal note:

Bob grew up in north Dallas, the eldest of three brothers and one sister. He attended Thomas Jefferson High School, where he was a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist and a senior trainer on the track, baseball and football teams. He served as a non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Marines and is the proud father of a son and a daughter—and also the grandfather of three. A recovering alcoholic, Bob has been an active member of A.A. and Al-anon since 1987. After 12 years in Houston, he moved to Fort Worth in 1985.  He is a long-time member of First United Methodist Church, an officer in his sunday school class, and a member of Holy Family Catholic Community.  Bob is a member supporter of the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens, the Kimbell Art Museum, the Fort Worth Zoo, and the Renaissance Consort of Fort Worth. His hobbies include volunteering, reading, web design, Sunday driving on Texas' 2-lane back roads and "fixing things."   Bob is working on a book entitled "Necessary Humilities".  His favorite past-time is conversation with a close friend over good coffee with ice cream on the side following a better-than-average movie, play or musical performance.  Walking in the words with Mary and his border collie, Sweetie, are high on his list, too...along with dirt biking and RV shopping.
