I am a straight ally; can I still be a member?
Yes, yes, yes!! Straight allies are an essential part of the GLBT movement.
We value our straight supporters and encourage them to join GLAD.
I am not a student at the University of North Texas (UNT),
can I still be in your organization?
Yes, everyone in the community is welcome.
What activities does GLAD participate in?
GLAD is both a social and political organization. Our events include: letter writing parties,
movie nights, voter registration drives, talent shows, game nights, occasional protests,
Coming Out Week events, pride marches, charity events, drag shows, etc.
What if I'm not out and still want to be a member of GLAD?
GLAD respects the privacy of its members. Coming out is a personal issue and
no one from our organization will 'out' you.
Are bisexuals and transgender people welcome?
Yes. We don't focus on gay and lesbian issues alone - everyone is welcome!
How do I become a member?
Just attend our meetings. It's that simple!
How do I keep up with what GLAD is doing?
The best way to stay informed about GLAD activities and events is to join the Yahoo Group.
To do this, click on the 'Join Yahoo Group' link in the Join Us section of the site.
Fill in your information, you will be immediately added to the group. Upcoming events are also
listed on the main page of the website, and announced at our meetings.
Wasn't there a student organization called Courage a few years back?
GLAD is the new name for Courage. To avoid conflict with another group by the
same name it was decided by Courage members at that time to change the title
of the organization to the Gay and Lesbian Association of Denton (GLAD).
Who do I contact with questions about GLAD?
You can contact the president, Andrew Wexler, at
andrew.wexler@gmail.com
Can we meet for an interview? I need information for a project.
Of course! Just contact us by e-mail to set up a time and place.
Can GLAD members fill out surveys for my class/project during a meeting?
Probably - however, we will need to review the survey beforehand. Just send one of the officers
an e-mail with a copy of the survey, the name of your class, your professor's contact
information, and the topic of the study. We will get back to you ASAP.
I am facing homophobia/harassment. What should I do?
This can be an extremely difficult situation. If you or someone you know is facing
verbal or physical abuse, you should first talk with a counselor, friend or parent
that you can trust. There are also several university resources available:
- You can contact the counseling and testing services at (940) 565-2741 or
visit their website at http://www.unt.edu/cat/
- You may also contact the Office of Equity and Diversity for more information and assistance.
Visit their website at http://www.unt.edu/edo/
If you need further resources, feel free to e-mail or call an officer. We are here to provide support!
Can I make a suggestion?
Of course! We love e-mails! Especially with suggestions!
